Why What You’ve Been Doing Shouldn’t Have Been Working: “The Pivot” Is Coming – Ready or Not, and What You Should Be Doing About It

Stephen A. Ingalls, President and CEO - Catalyzer

As we reflect on managing and leading our teammates, “The Great Resignation” is on our minds. What many won’t reveal is that this “thing” we started paying lots of attention to last year has been unfolding steadily since 2009. It’s an unmistakable trajectory of turnover that, we believe threatens our conventional thinking about retention and those attendant tools we have been using to strengthen it. This discussion intentionally takes the conversation beyond the problem’s statement and to potential solutions – solutions that several years ago, many of you wouldn’t have even considered (like working from home). Using both a synthesis of the thinking swirling around in the consulting/management world and our observations of community banking contexts across the county, but especially in Ohio, we outline a patchwork of new approaches and thinking that, we believe, more effectively addresses the contemporary retention challenge. We look forward to sharing our thinking and tickling yours.

Skills Needed in an Age of Change – Resilience, Change Management, and Design Thinking

Joan Berry Kalamas, SPHR, SHRM-SCP - President and Founder, Strategic Solutions

Today’s overwhelming environment is filled with constant changes, never ending pressures, increasing inflation, conflicting news stories from social media, declining financial trends, increasing customer demands, continued cyberattacks, increased shortages of employee talent, etc. The list goes on and on but organizations can employ strategies to help deal with and be successful despite all of these challenges and changes.

One strategy is to develop resilience, the ability to be flexible to adapt and recover from adversity or necessary change.   Resilience will help meet those challenges and demands and help us to focus on our organizations purpose and goals for the future.

Mastering change management is another great strategy. It has been estimated that approximately 50% of all organizational change initiatives are unsuccessful so learning how to plan for, coordinate, communicate and carry out change is critical.

A third strategy that is helpful is using Design Thinking, a process concerned with solving complex problems that focuses on solving problems for our people - employees, customers, etc. We need to have our finger on the “pulse” of our business and look at needs, assumptions, barriers, attitudes and other factors to help create the best possible solutions for our people and our organizations so we can remain successful and sustainable.

Workforce Wake-up Call: The Case for Operationalizing Turnover

Megan Odell, Workforce Retention Speaker & Trainer - Magnet Culture

In the current workforce landscape, employees have the upper hand with “now hiring” signs on every corner. Staffing challenges and employee turnover are here to stay. It’s time for leaders to rethink staffing stability and set realistic goals, budgets, and business models around permanent turnover. The best way to increase employee retention is to plan for and adjust current operations to manage impending levels of employee turnover and make the proper long-term retention investments.

Magnet Culture’s workforce thought leader will explore strategies for operationalizing turnover so organizations can plan for sustainable success. With a 12-month turnover reduction goal set, you can budget for the remaining turnover AND for the three unquestionable investments needed to hit the goal. As the saying goes, failing to plan is planning to fail. Make your organization a place where keeping people is an actual goal and not just a recurring discussion.
